Plumbing

There is never a good time for plumbing trouble

Water is the one building service that does damage while it fails. A furnace that quits is uncomfortable; a supply line that splits behind drywall is a claim. That difference is why we keep a technician on call every night of the year.

Our plumbing work spans the whole range: service calls on fixtures and valves, repairs to supply and drain lines, full repipes in older houses where galvanised steel has closed up with corrosion, gas line work, and rough-in and trim for remodels.

Manhattan’s housing stock runs from pre-war bungalows with cast iron and galvanised steel to new builds in PEX. We work in all of them, and we will tell you honestly when a repair is patching a system that needs replacing.

What is included

General Plumbing: the full scope

Four areas of work under this heading. Most calls fall into one; larger projects touch several.

Leak detection and repair

Not every leak announces itself. A meter that creeps with every fixture closed, a warm patch on a slab, or an unexplained jump in the water bill all point at a line losing water somewhere you cannot see.

  • Meter testing and isolation
  • Slab and wall leak location
  • Supply line repair and replacement
  • Shut-off and stop valve replacement
  • Pressure regulator testing
  • Hose bib and outdoor line repair

Fixtures and appliances

Faucets, sinks, toilets, shower valves, garbage disposals, dishwashers, washing machine boxes and ice maker lines. Customer-supplied fixtures are welcome.

  • Faucet and cartridge replacement
  • Toilet rebuild or full replacement
  • Shower and tub valve service
  • Garbage disposal installation
  • Appliance connection and shut-offs
  • ADA-height fixture upgrades

Repiping and remodels

When a house has more patches than pipe, replacement stops being the expensive option. We repipe in copper or PEX depending on the run, and handle rough-in and trim for bath and kitchen projects.

  • Galvanised to copper or PEX conversion
  • Whole-house and partial repipes
  • Bath and kitchen rough-in
  • Water line relocation
  • Pressure balancing across the house
  • Final trim and commissioning

Gas lines and appliances

Black iron and CSST gas piping for ranges, dryers, fireplaces, outdoor grills and generators — pressure-tested and leak-checked on completion, every time.

  • New appliance gas runs
  • Line extension and relocation
  • Sediment traps and shut-off valves
  • Pressure testing and documentation
  • Leak investigation
  • Generator and grill connections

When to stop waiting and call

Recognising these early is usually the difference between a service call and a replacement.

The water meter moves with everything off

Close every fixture, then watch the meter’s low-flow indicator. Any movement at all means water is escaping somewhere in the system.

Pressure has dropped across the whole house

A single slow fixture is an aerator. Every fixture at once points at the regulator, the main, or corrosion closing up galvanised pipe.

Discoloured water on first draw

Brown or rusty water that clears after a minute usually means corroding galvanised pipe or a water heater overdue for a flush and anode inspection.

Banging when a valve closes

Water hammer. Beyond the noise, those pressure spikes work joints loose over time. Arrestors and correct pressure settings solve it.

Damp, warm patches on a slab floor

A hot-water line leaking under the slab. This one does not improve on its own and gets more expensive every week.

A sewer smell that comes and goes

Usually a dry or siphoned trap, or a venting fault. Sewer gas belongs outside; intermittent smells indoors deserve a look.

Questions

About general plumbing

Yes. The main number reaches the on-call technician outside office hours, every night of the year. We will tell you on that call what the after-hours rate is and roughly how long we will be, so you can decide whether the problem can wait for a weekday visit.

Anything actively causing damage or making the building unsafe: a burst or split supply line, sewage backing up into the building, a water heater leaking badly, or a suspected gas leak. For a suspected gas leak, leave the building and call the utility first, then call us.

Yes, and we see plenty of it in older Manhattan neighbourhoods. Be aware that galvanised pipe corrodes inward: the bore closes up over decades, so pressure falls and threads become brittle. Cutting into a fragile run often reveals more bad pipe. We will say plainly when patching has stopped being sensible.

Both are excellent when installed properly. PEX is faster in a finished house because it snakes through joist bays with fewer openings, it tolerates a freeze far better, and it costs less. Copper is more robust where pipe is exposed and is the traditional choice for short, visible runs. We often use both in one house.

Happily. The product warranty stays with the manufacturer and our labour warranty covers the installation. One request: open the box and check it is complete and undamaged before we arrive, so a missing part does not cost you a second visit.

What people say about this work

“Our AC quit on the hottest Saturday of the year. Henton had somebody at the house within two hours, found a failed run capacitor and had us cold again before dinner. No drama, no upsell.”

Dana R.Manhattan, KS

“They replaced a 24-year-old furnace and added a return duct we badly needed. The crew laid down drop cloths in every room they walked through and hauled the old unit away the same afternoon.”

Mark & Julie T.Wamego, KS

“Main line backed up into the basement on a Sunday. The technician cabled it, then ran a camera and showed me the root intrusion on screen so I could actually see what I was paying to fix.”

Priya S.Manhattan, KS

“I have used Henton for both of my rental properties for six years. They quote a range up front, call when they are running late, and the invoice always matches what we discussed.”

Greg H.St. George, KS

“The yearly service agreement is the best money I spend on this house. Two visits a year, and they caught a cracked heat exchanger before it became a carbon monoxide problem.”

Ellen W.Manhattan, KS

“Tankless install in a 1940s house with tight venting. They took the time to do it right instead of talking me into something easier for them. Hot water has been flawless for two years.”

Tomas L.Riley, KS
