Clearing the blockage is half the job

Any competent plumber can push a cable through a blockage and get water moving. The question that actually matters is why the line blocked, because that determines whether you are calling again in six weeks.

Grease, hair, roots, a bellied section of pipe, so-called flushable wipes and a blocked vent all present the same way at the sink. Telling them apart is the difference between a twenty-minute cable job and a line that needs replacing.

That is why we put a camera in anything that has blocked more than once. Seeing the inside of your own sewer lateral on a screen is worth more than any explanation we could give you standing in the yard.

What is included

Drain & Sewer Cleaning: the full scope

Four areas of work under this heading. Most calls fall into one; larger projects touch several.

Drain cabling

The everyday tool for the everyday blockage. A powered cable with the correct head for the line size cuts through soft obstructions and pulls back what it can.

  • Kitchen and bathroom branch lines
  • Floor and laundry drains
  • Main line access through cleanouts
  • Correct head selection by pipe size
  • Roof vent clearing where needed
  • Same-day service in most cases

Hydro-jetting

High-pressure water scours the full inside diameter of a line rather than boring a hole through the obstruction. It is the right answer for grease, scale and heavy root mass.

  • Grease removal in kitchen lines
  • Root mass cutting and flushing
  • Scale removal in cast iron
  • Restaurant and commercial lines
  • Before-and-after camera verification
  • Preventive scheduled jetting

Camera inspection

A self-levelling camera with a locator shows the condition of the line, the exact nature of the obstruction, and where it sits — both distance and depth — so any digging is precise.

  • Full lateral survey to the main
  • Locating depth and position
  • Belly, offset and crack identification
  • Pre-purchase inspections
  • Recording provided on request
  • Evidence for insurance claims

Prevention and maintenance

For houses with a known root problem or a commercial kitchen, scheduled maintenance is far cheaper than emergency response and a clean-up.

  • Scheduled cleaning intervals
  • Grease trap guidance
  • Root treatment recommendations
  • Cleanout installation for easier access
  • Backwater valve advice
  • Written condition report
Know the symptoms

Six causes, and how to recognise each

Recognising these early is usually the difference between a service call and a replacement.

Grease

Kitchen line only, slow for weeks then fully blocked, and often worse after a holiday. Grease cools on the pipe wall and builds inward like cholesterol. Jetting removes it; cabling only bores a hole.

Hair and soap

Bathroom sinks and tubs. Gradual slowing that responds well to cabling and a good strainer afterwards. Almost never affects the main.

Tree roots

Main line, repeating on a seasonal cycle, often with gurgling toilets. Roots enter at joints seeking moisture. Cutting buys time; the joint is still open.

A bellied or offset pipe

Repeating blockages at the same distance every time, with solids collecting in a low spot. A camera confirms it. No amount of cleaning fixes a sag — that section needs replacing.

Wipes and non-flushables

Sudden total blockage with no gradual warning. “Flushable” wipes do not break down; they knit together with grease into a solid mass.

A blocked vent

Gurgling from one fixture when another drains, and traps that dry out. The drain itself is clear — the system simply cannot pull air. Common after a hard frost closes the roof vent.

Questions

About drain and sewer cleaning

For anything beyond a very minor slow drain, yes. Caustic products generate heat, can distort PVC and pit older metal traps, and they rarely clear a real blockage — they simply sit on top of it. Then the technician who opens the trap gets a face full of it. If you have already poured some in, tell us so we can take precautions.

Most houses never need scheduled cleaning. Properties with known root intrusion often settle into an 18- to 24-month rhythm, and commercial kitchens usually want quarterly or half-yearly jetting. A camera survey tells us which category you are in.

In most arrangements the property owner is responsible for the lateral from the building to the connection at the public main. Where exactly that boundary falls varies by municipality, so it is worth confirming with the city before any excavation is planned.

Mechanical cutting and jetting clear the mass, and a root treatment slows regrowth, but neither closes the joint the roots came through. Permanent resolution means repairing or lining that section. We will show you the joint on camera so the choice is informed rather than assumed.

Almost always a venting problem. Draining water needs replacement air; if the vent is blocked the system pulls it through the nearest trap instead, which is the sound you hear. It can siphon the trap dry and let sewer gas into the room, so it is worth sorting.

What people say about this work

“Our AC quit on the hottest Saturday of the year. Henton had somebody at the house within two hours, found a failed run capacitor and had us cold again before dinner. No drama, no upsell.”

Dana R.Manhattan, KS

“They replaced a 24-year-old furnace and added a return duct we badly needed. The crew laid down drop cloths in every room they walked through and hauled the old unit away the same afternoon.”

Mark & Julie T.Wamego, KS

“Main line backed up into the basement on a Sunday. The technician cabled it, then ran a camera and showed me the root intrusion on screen so I could actually see what I was paying to fix.”

Priya S.Manhattan, KS

“I have used Henton for both of my rental properties for six years. They quote a range up front, call when they are running late, and the invoice always matches what we discussed.”

Greg H.St. George, KS

“The yearly service agreement is the best money I spend on this house. Two visits a year, and they caught a cracked heat exchanger before it became a carbon monoxide problem.”

Ellen W.Manhattan, KS

“Tankless install in a 1940s house with tight venting. They took the time to do it right instead of talking me into something easier for them. Hot water has been flawless for two years.”

Tomas L.Riley, KS
