Summer here does not ease in. It arrives in June and sits on the Flint Hills until September, and a system that limped through May will fail on the first weekend above 100 °F — which is also the weekend every contractor in the county is booked solid.
That timing problem is the whole argument for servicing cooling equipment in spring. It is also why we keep common failure parts — run capacitors, contactors, condensate pumps, blower motors — stocked on the trucks rather than ordering them when somebody is already sweating.
We work on every residential cooling configuration found in this area: split systems with a gas furnace air handler, all-electric heat pumps with strip backup, dual-fuel setups, and ductless mini-splits in additions and garages.
Four areas of work under this heading. Most calls fall into one; larger projects touch several.
Diagnostics start with measurements, not guesses: supply and return temperatures, static pressure, amp draw on the compressor and fan, superheat and subcooling. Most single-component faults are fixed on the first visit.
New equipment starts with a room-by-room Manual J load calculation. Sizing from the old unit's badge is how a house ends up with a system that short-cycles for twenty years and never removes humidity properly.
A real tune-up is a twelve-point service with written measurements, not a rinse of the condenser and a sticker on the cabinet. It is included twice a year on the Yearly Service Agreement.
For additions, converted garages, sunrooms and older houses without ductwork, a ductless head gives zoned cooling and heating without tearing into the structure.
Recognising these early is usually the difference between a service call and a replacement.
Usually a refrigerant charge problem, a failed compressor or a stuck outdoor unit. Switch the system off rather than letting it run — a compressor short on refrigerant is a compressor destroying itself.
Classic failed run capacitor. It is an inexpensive part, but running the compressor against a dead capacitor for long is not inexpensive at all.
Airflow starvation or a low charge. Turn the system off, set the fan to ON to thaw the coil, and change the filter while you wait.
Undersized equipment, a dirty coil, leaking ducts or a charge issue. On a design day some run time is normal; on a mild evening it is not.
A blocked condensate drain or a failed pump. Cheap to fix now, expensive once it has soaked a ceiling or the floor of a finished basement.
Efficiency loss is gradual and easy to miss. Comparing this July to last July on the same meter is the cleanest signal you will get.

Ranges are indicative and assume normal access during business hours. Emergency and after-hours work carries a premium rate, confirmed with you before dispatch.
Once a year, in spring, before the first sustained hot spell. Systems that also provide heating — heat pumps — benefit from twice-yearly service because they run all year. A skipped year is rarely catastrophic; five skipped years usually shows up as a compressor.
The only defensible answer comes from a Manual J load calculation: square footage, orientation, window area and type, insulation levels, infiltration and duct losses. Oversized equipment is a common and expensive mistake — it cools the air quickly, shuts off before it has removed moisture, and leaves the house cold and clammy.
Not immediately, but plan for it. R-22 has not been produced or imported since 2020, and reclaimed stock is expensive and getting worse. If an R-22 system needs a significant repair, the arithmetic usually favours replacement.
Much more so than it was fifteen years ago. Modern cold-climate heat pumps hold useful capacity well below freezing, and pairing one with a gas furnace as a dual-fuel system lets the controls pick whichever fuel is cheaper at a given outdoor temperature.
